Holiday Ale Festival: Day Three

Sat Dec 01, 2007 at 07:20:09 PM PDT

I swore the first thing I would do when I got home was take a shower.  I just finished drying off, so here I am.

Today I went to the winterbrew festival with my for-all-practical-purposes son-in-law.  As it happens, I had to wait for him to get up and get ready, so it was after noon already by the time we got started.  My daughter drove us into town, since they had company last night till waaaaay late, and she wanted to get some rest and run some errands.

We had a minor delay of about 20 minutes due to the motorcycle parade of donations up to Doernbecher Children's Hospital that ran down Powell and across the Ross Island Bridge beginning not long before we left home.  The finale of that was a TriMet bus stuffed to the roof with toys and flying down the road trying to keep up with the motorcycles.  This happens every year - just not usually on December 1, so I hadn't thought to factor that in to the driving plan.  Needless to say, we went a different route to downtown from what we had intended.

My daughter found a safe place to let us out a few blocks away from Pioneer Square and went on about her day.

The boyfriend and I got in line.  It was not a long one, since it wasn't quite 1:00, but still ....  Once both of us were safely in, we split up and started for the beer lines (which were still quite short at that point).

My first for this day was Alaskan Brewing's (Juneau) Smoked Porter (6.5% ABV).  Then I went for Brasserie St. Feullien's (Le Roeuix, Belgium) Cuvee de Noel (9% ABV) and a bratwurst.  I also managed to get the Deschutes (Bend, OR) 2005 Mirror Mirror, which was another of the rarities I thought I had missed entirely.  I wouldn't have bothered me much if I had - it was rather bitter.

I am not going to try too hard to get things in the actual order I had them from here on out.  Though I do remember that after the Mirror Mirror, I did Rogue Ales's (Newport, OR) Santa's Private Reserve (5.3% ABV).  I believe it was while I was in line for Hopworks Urban Brewery's (Portland) Organic Kentucky Christmas Ale (7% ABV) that I made the Brit visiting from where he lives in Canada very happy.  I asked him where in England he was from.  He said most Americans asked him where in Australia he was from - but I've known a couple of Aussies, and his accent didn't have enough sharp edges to be from there.  A Londoner born and bred.

Today's really awful was Lagunitas Brewing's (Petaluma, CA) Oaked Brown Shugga (9.9% ABV).  It's listed as a strong ale, and the blurb is complimentary, but my own notes say only "Gak".  I liked Max's Fanno Creek Brewpub's (Tigard, OR) O'Holy Hops - an IPA, but another nice one.

At some point, I had a sample of Full Sail's (Hood River, OR) Wreck the Halls (6.7% ABV).  It is occasionally available in stores, but only occasionally.  I also has some of Brassierie Dubuisson's (Wallonia, Belgium) Scaldis Noel (12%), and Caldera Brewing's (Ashland, OR) Cauldron Brew '07 (6.7% ABV).  The Widmer Brothers (Portland) provided a weizendoppelbock called Decorator (7.7% ABV)

I had Pelican's (Pacific City, OR) Bad Santa (6.8% ABV), which is listed as a Black IPA (meh), and Great Divide's (Denver) Old Ruffian Barleywine (10.2% ABV).  I also had Lompoc Brewing's (Portland) Brewdolph (8.6% ABV), and it was while I was in line for Double Mountain Brewery & Taproom's (Hood River, OR) FaLaLaLaLa (7.4% ABV) that the little woman with an accent that turned out to be Belgian started talking to me.  She had been headed out for a walking tour of town (being here on business), and had seen all these people with beer mugs in their hands so she had decided to see what it was like.  I told her about Otis (see Day One), and she ended up getting a full mug of it.  Yes, I did ask - she said that they had sent us the good stuff from the Belgian breweries.

I finished up with BJ's Restaurant and Brewery's (Portland) On Comet (8.4% ABV) and Calapooia Brewing's (Albany, OR) Kringle Krack (7.5% ABV) in that order.  I do not remember which I was in line for when I saw the little Belgian woman in the next row over.  She said she was going to try the Laurelwood SinterKlaas (see Day 1), because it was described as a Belgian-style tripel.  Her name is Cynthia, by the way - she wrote her opinion down for me and signed it!  She said it was very nice, and reminded her of a Belgian beer called Duvel (Devil) - the aftertaste was a bit different, she said, but otherwise very like.  She asked me to take a picture of her, which I did - I hope it turned out well.

My daughter's boyfriend ran into a couple neighbors that I am unacquainted with (north end of the complex - I'm south end), and hung out with them.  I left before he did, but he was home when I arrived.  I stopped to get some dinner first, and they came straight home.

On my way out, a young woman stopped me and asked if she could please have her picture taken with me and my sweatshirt (Hairy Otter and the Scallop Surprise).  I would have obliged if I had been stone-cold sober!

I go back again tomorrow (11, maybe 12 left to try) with my daughter this time.  We are going to try to arrive around noon - we might even see Pax there (look for the red fedora with the flame-colored trim).  Tomorrow, I am actually going to look at the goodies available for sale.
